Giving to the Needy

Often when we think about giving to those who are in need, we think about the things we might supply temporally. Perhaps we consider families we visit teach who might stand in need of temporary financial help from the church, or who are struggling to feed their families and require assistance from the bishop’s storehouse. However, meeting the immediate needs of those requiring assistance is not the only – or the best- way to serve. We can often serve them even more by using our skills. Having moved from a fairly well-to-do ward to a very poor branch has provided … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: His Hands on The Earth

As Matthew 25 draws to a close, the Savior teaches us to serve those around Him when He states, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” King Benjamin taught a similar principle in Mosiah 2:17: “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.” The Lord knows that there is a time and a place for all things. As a mom of four small children, it can be difficult to actually seek out people to serve … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: Faith to Move Mountains

We often hear about having enough faith to move mountains. But as I listened to a song on the radio today, I gained a different perspective on the subject. Generally, we think of the relocation as a sudden, earth-shattering event, but the song gives another look. Christ tells us in Matthew 21:21 that “If ye have faith and doubt not…if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.” The image this creates is of the mountain crumbling into the sea by its own accord, or by the power … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: May 13th through 19th

It’s been a great week in the LDS Family Blog! I hope you enjoyed reading as much as Miriam and I enjoyed writing! Gospel Doctrine: This upcoming weekend is stake conference for our stake. Instead of my regular lesson-oriented scripture study, I’m hitting the topical guide for phrases that have peaked my interest. Since they don’t particularly relate, I have simply included them in the day-to-day summary. Monday, May 14th: In Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 17, we reviewed the topics covered at church last week. In Serving Sisters in Primary and Young Women, we talked about how we as sisters … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: Spit and Mud and Kigatsuku

In April 1992, Sister Chieko N. Okazaki, First Counselor in the Relief Society Presidency, gave a talk entitled “Spit and Mud and Kigatsuku.” This talk, based on the concept of giving service, addresses the need to serve without being commanded. Sister Okazaki began by defining the Japanese word “kigatsuku,” which means “an inner spirit to act without being told what to do.” She talks about how her mother taught her to follow her instincts while she was young by asking, “What would a kigatsuku girl do now?” As a child, she learned to notice a need and fill it. We, … Continue reading
